Network Storage Server

In computing, a file server is a computer attached to a network that has the primary purpose of providing a central location for shared disk access, i.e. shared storage of computer files (such as documents, sound files, photographs, movies, images, databases, etc.) that can be accessed by the workstations that are attached to the computer network. The term server highlights the role of the machine in the client-server scheme, where the clients are the workstations using the storage. A file server usually does not perform any calculations and also does not run any programs on behalf of the clients. It is primarily designed to enable the rapid storage and retrieval of data where the heavy computation is provided by the workstations. The major benefit of running a file server is shared ‘folders’ between employees, promoting data security and integrity. Although technologies like RAID can be applied to every desktop, it is cost prohibitive. It makes better financial sense to utilize a single File Server, running the latest redundancy technologies and backup solutions to protect your company’s valuable data assets.

Furthermore, a file server can optionally function as an integrated space to manage user accounts. This allows an office worker to log in to any machine using a single user-name and password, and acts as a centralized place where passwords are managed. As long as the desktop/documents are placed on the server, they can follow the user across machines.
